Why does stress occur as a result of procrastination?
Procrastination is a major source of stress. It is an act of consistently putting off the completion of an intended task.
It is usually considered a stressor because it usually makes you delay until the last minute.
This stressor most often comes in several ways:
- Acting on the easier tasks before the more difficult ones.
- Preferring pleasure to pressing tasks
- Wasting time on less demanding tasks in order to avoid performing the difficult ones.
Most of the time, we tend to regret after we have procrastinated because we end up having less time to complete an important task.
We usually think we are actually enjoying ourselves when we procrastinate, but little do we know that when the deadlines start approaching we would have spent most of our time doing things that are of less importance.

Avoid Physical Discomfort
If you have low resistance to physical discomfort you have more tendency to procrastinate. You tend to find ways of putting off a difficult task to delay experiencing such discomfort.
When you choose to procrastinate to avoid discomfort, what you fail to understand is it negatively affects you down the line. You have to know your know your threshold for discomfort.
Fear of Failing:
Almost everyone is scared of failing. We tend to push events that have a high chance of us failing as long as we can.
When we are scared of failing we person visualize the discomforts we might experience both emotionally and mentally if we fail.
And if you are a perfectionist, you might even have a greater tendency to procrastinate because you are afraid of failure.
The Fear of Disapproval
Most of the times we adults become hesitant to performing a task because of the fear of rejection or refusal.
This fear originates from the feeling that what others think of us is of more value than what we think of ourselves.
In such a case we tend to accept almost everything others might think of us.
Your Stand On A Task
The moment we feel it is not right for us to do a thing, we will obviously avoid performing the task for as long as we can.
When the deadline starts approaching, we then start to feel anxious. This feeling only makes the work even harder to complete.
What to Do to End Procrastinating?
Try not to overthink
Try not to over think. Repeating ideas in your mind without actually having to do anything about them is actually stressful. If something is in your mind just do it don’t think a lot.
Change Your Way of Thinking
A lot of people tend to procrastinate just because they want to delay the feeling of discomfort.
They think that by procrastinating the effect of the task will be less felt.
They forget that procrastination actually elongates the feeling of discomfort.
When you feel tensed up because of the outcome of a task you have to accomplish, you have the power to reduce the tension by planning ahead.
In doing this you have to make sure that you put down all the details of your actual plan,
We usually see things from a different perspective when they are written down.
The things that look too tasking and challenging will appear less tasking when you plan and have the details written down.
Planning for the future makes you work with goals in mind and helps you grasp the picture of what to expect after and during the process of task completion.
At the end, you should evaluate and see if writing down the details of your task helps you solve the problem of procrastinating. If it does, you are advised to repeat the same process when you feel like procrastinating again.
