Business Ideas & Opportunities in Nigeria
Blogging & Social Media
Blogging has recently started gaining popularity in Nigeria. It is an easy way to get into the online business world. When I talk about blogging, I don’t mean somewhere you publish whatever comes to mind. No. I mean blogging as a real business.
In this section, I want to give you some ideas how you can earn an income from your blog and turn it into a real business.
These are some of the methods I use personally and I must tell you ahead of time, it’s not going to be easy as it seems, but with some helpful tips and expert advice, I think it will go a long way in helping you start your online business.
Affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to start an online business and earn an income in Nigeria.
The Business Idea
The idea is for you as a website owner or blogger to promote other people’s product on your website and receive a commission when someone buys the product via your website/link.
It is not very difficult. Start a blog in a niche. (See the infographic above for ideas to start a blog about). You have to write a blog post about products and services other companies sell. My advice is you should only promote products and services you’ve used or you have good knowledge about. You shouldn’t promote something that isn’t good because if you do, you weaken your brand and lose the trust of your readers.
Don’t expect to make a million naira overnight. Let me make this clear here, whatever business you create, isn’t going to start throwing money at you overnight. An online business is a real business, It takes time, you’re still going to put in long hours working sometimes. You’re still going to have weeks when you’re staying up late and getting up early. When you have no idea quite how things are going to get done.
The amount of income you can earn as an affiliate marketer depends very much on your industry and the number of readers you attract to your blog. One of the prominent affiliate marketers in Nigeria is Paschal Okafor who owns Naijatechguide.com His blog gets close to 800,000 visitors every month.
Naijatechguide attracts close to 800K Visits every month.
If he were to be paying for that traffic, (that’s paying Google or Bing to get visitors to his website) it will cost him over 30 million Naira every month. What this tells you is, that blog should be making at least anywhere from 5 million to 15 million Naira in a month if he is monetizing it the right way.
Naijatechguide estimated traffic cost is 30 Million Naira for 566K visitors to his site

Back in 2014, Paschal was paid a million naira commission by Konga Nigeria. So the question on your mind… Can you make one million from Konga affiliates too? Absolutely No. Things have changed. Konga reduced their commission rate. As of right now 2017 you only get about 1% commission on every successful sale. But the good news is you can earn up to 30k in a day with Jumia Nigeria. Jumia Nigeria Commission rate is quite okay. I have personally tested both of them on my blog.
What Naijatechguide does is refer products sold on Jumia.com.ng and Konga.com. He also gets paid by Google to place advertisement on his site. We’ll cover this below.
Here’s to summarize this method:
- You write product reviews
- You can write product comparisons
- Optimize your content for search engines to get free traffic to your website
- Showcase studies of how the product helped you (or someone else)
- Build a social following on any social network platform or an email list to promote products or services
AdSense is an advertising network run by Google. Once your blog is approved by Google AdSense, ads will be served on your blog in different forms: text, images, and video.
A Sample of Ads Served by Google AdSense
Google AdSense is free to join, but you will still need to be approved. The good thing is, once you are approved for one site, you won’t don’t need to get another approval for the rest of your sites.
Google AdSense and Affiliate Marketing are the two ways most new bloggers earn an income online. At least at the very beginning. After running the blog for some time you start to get a clear picture of what is demanded and of course, you can always create your own products and sell it on your blog.
The Business Idea
The idea here is for you to publish articles that provide value. Websites that have a lot of traffic and plenty of useful articles will benefit the most.
The main way AdSense works is you get paid every time someone clicks on an ad. If your website doesn’t have enough traffic – there’s no point in putting up ads because you can’t monetize traffic if you have none.
You set up your website on a defined niche and publish useful articles. Once you are getting enough traffic, you can apply to Google AdSense, get your blog approved and start serving ads.
Start A YouTube Channel
YouTube has over a billion users. The network reaches more people than any cable network. YouTube generates hundreds of millions of views every single day. The world is obsessed with YouTube and that’s why you need to start your Youtube channel. Position yourself as an authority and meet some amazing people while doing it.
The Business Idea
The idea here is for you to regularly publish videos on youtube. Once your youtube channel starts getting views you can start monetizing it. You can publish videos about anything. Absolutely anything that doesn’t go against Youtube’s terms of service.
Go to Youtube.com while logged into your Google account and upload your first video. Make videos about things you love, even if you don’t think anyone wants to watch it. There’s someone out there who does.
You must have heard about the little Nigerian Girl – Mark Angel the comedian. She got so popular because of Youtube. Check out her channel here. This girl is probably richer than most oil company workers. That’s of cause if she has a good manager who knows what to do with the attention she’s getting.
This short Video already has over A million views. It was published 5 days ago. That’s thousands of $$ in Ads revenue.
Mark Angel get’s 130K monthly Visitors to her website In addition to the millions of daily views she gets on her Youtube channel
Like everything else, starting a YouTube channel is all about mindset. You can’t go in thinking you’ll fail. You have to go in with a winning attitude and be confident in your abilities. You can do it! Little Mark Angel does it! Just don’t go into it just for the sake of making money, but it can lead to steady income. You do not need a nice camera to get started, I have seen people who record videos and run their youtube channel with the camera on their phone. So my friend, stop complaining about the lack of jobs in Nigeria and just get started!
Okay, I get it, so you have a Masters Degree. Who cares? This ain’t 1999. The internet has disrupted everything. You degrees are all outdated. Period. Mark Angel who is yet to complete her primary education has a successful online business that pays her millions of Naira.
Anyways, enough of my ranting. It just pisses me off whenever I hear so many talented Nigerians complain of unemployment when there are so many opportunities.
If you want to get involved in Blogging & Social Media in Nigeria, you’ll get the best return by taking doing the following:
First, if you’ll be doing affiliate marketing, you need to select products that Nigerians are want to buy- products that solve a particular need. There are several benefits to writing an ebook, especially as a blogger or online business. You can build an additional revenue stream, brand yourself as an expert on a particular topic.
